Many plants, if left in water long enough, will "root", or grow new roots from the cut stems in order to absorb more water. Some will also sprout new growth and become full fledged living plants again, even though they're not in soil. I wasn't sure if the blackberry cutting would root and I was about to chuck it all in the trash yesterday when I saw the beginnings of new growth. So now we wait and see what it turns into.
